The tensile strength of quartz glass can reach up to 50 N/mm². In practice, however, this value is clearly lower. The reasons are primarily the number and concentration of surface defects, which, in combination with atmospheric influences, such as moisture, reduce the tensile strength. Even the geometry of a quartz glass piece plays a role. The surface condition of quartz glass is of great significance. As the probability for mechanical defects increases with the surface area, the tensile strength of quartz glass is a function of its size. Even the type of surface treatment and the age of quartz glass influence its properties. By fire-polishing, for example, the quality of the quartz glass surface is improved.
